Ian and his children prepare for the rally

A sedate holiday with the family is not something that Ian Hulme is planning next month.
The Openreach customer service engineer, his wife Keri and children Rhys, ten, and four-year-old Olivia will be hitting ten European countries in just seven days - when they take part in the Landy/Bofa Rally. The family, who live in Abertillery, Gwent, say they are really excited about the challenge that lies ahead and say that despite young Olivia’s age, she is really looking forward to the adventure. Ian and Keri have raised £1,000, even before they set off, for ASBAH - the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalous, from which young Olivia suffers. The couple are big fans of off-roading and decided to take part in the rally to raise funds for the charity, although the rally itself is not a fundraising event. They are finalising plans and getting their 4x4 Mitsubishi Shogun ready for the rally, which will take in France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Andorra, Leichenstein, Austria, Luxembourg and Belgium. Part competition and part off-road drive, the event is also partly social. There is the opportunity for competitors to raise large sums of money for charities and good causes, and families as well as individuals can take part. There is no maximum age limit. Ian said: “We don’t know from day to day where we will be going. We are given a destination, but we have to plan the route,” he said. “Although it is a competition, we aren’t in it to win, but we want to enjoy it. There are daily tasks that we have to do to gain points en route and there will be a prize giving dinner back at Calais." The family will stop off at various campsites and will clock up 2,500 miles in the seven days. They leave the UK from Dover on 12 September and start the rally the following day. “We have been driving off-road cars for four years and we are really looking forward to this competition. The kids can’t wait,” Ian said. Sponsorship has come from friends, family local businesses and £295 from BT.
