Liz’s award keeps brownies dry

A Glasgow brownie pack is home and dry - thanks to the efforts of Customer Service’s Liz Mitchinson.
Liz, who works in complaints management, received a BT Community Champions award for her volunteer work with the city’s 124th Brownie Pack - and the cash boost will help buy new waterproof jackets for the brownies. Liz is the pack’s brown owl, but has been involved with volunteering for the past 22 years. After joining brownies at seven, she worked her way up through the ranks to become a young leader, a guiding assistant, to her current role as a guider. “The best thing about brownies is . . . everything. Their enthusiasm, determination and commitment never fail to impress me,” said Liz. “It’s just a pity more people don’t feel they can spare a few hours to help out. I may not be a brownie any more but they certainly keep me feeling young. “I’m deeply involved and committed to the welfare and development of each girl in the pack and thoroughly enjoy every minute of it.” Liz gets involved at every stage of their progression as brownies - to ensure they achieve their full potential during their three to four years with the pack. “My priority is to make sure the activities we take part in are enjoyable and fun, and help the brownies learn the skills needed to get the most out of life and every opportunity available,” she said. “The girls go on to carry out volunteer work as girl guides, which means they make a very positive contribution within the community and the wider world. “It’s very rewarding and it’s great that BT recognises the ongoing commitment we volunteers give to our communities.” The stock of waterproof jackets that the brownies wear during outdoor tasks have, after 20 years’ use, seen better days, said Liz. “The cash will help to replace them and any cash left over can be used to organise activities and crafts.”
