Players are poker-faced at the table

A team from BT Vision has devised an unusual team-building event in the shape of a fun evening of poker that has brought employees together in an informal setting.
Bob Drummond, head of Vision management information systems, and colleagues have just held the inaugural Vision poker tournament in London. Bob said: “It was like an informal team-building event. Vision is a new product, and continues to grow rapidly. This is reflected in the number of new employees who arrive. It takes an event like this to bring everybody together, to put a face to a name and catch up.” The event was attended by more than 50 BT Vision and BT Design employees - along with their friends and families. Poker skill levels ranged from complete beginner - one of whom finished third - to very experienced. “It was such a huge success that we would like to run this again in late November as an early Christmas event and extend the invitation to other parts of BT. It would be good to have 100 people next time,” says Bob. The event came about after Bob and five other Vision employees attended a training course in Yarnfield, Staffordshire and realised they all enjoyed playing poker. “So we got a game going in the evenings. The poker didn't get in the way of our studies and we all passed our exams, which weren't easy,” adds Bob. “When we got back to the office people heard about the poker, and it snowballed from there as more and more people also said how much they enjoy playing poker, or would love to learn. So a decision was made that an event should be organised.” The event was held at Loose Cannons Poker Club, near Cannon Street station in London. Bob aims to repeat the event in late November at the same venue during a week day evening. It is open to any BT employee, but is unfunded by BT - so there will be a compulsory £25 entry fee that MUST be paid in advance, with around half the money going to the venue and every other penny into the prize fund. The first 45 minutes will be set aside as a practice session, where beginners and novices can benefit from a training session held by the venue's professional dealers and poker experts. Anybody who wants to take part, can e-mail Bob with the subject header, "Next poker night - count me in!".
