Students tackle BT challenges
Thursday September 18th 2008.   Posted: 09:45
With a little help from BT, schoolchildren in Hertfordshire have been learning how to communicate and collaborate better through technology.
A ten-strong team from BT led a day of challenges for 70 students from Year 9 at Turnford School in Cheshunt. A similar event has also been held at Meridian School in Royston for 80 Year 10 students from Meridian and Birchwood High School in Essex. At Turnford School, Tim Parnell, general manager, Undertakings programme, put the students through their paces with exercises in teamwork and problem-solving challenges. Tony Houghton of BT Design then set a technology challenge. The students also examined new technology such as videoconferencing systems and collaboration software programmes, learning to think about the technology and non-technology challenges of achieving communication, and collaboration for schools where there is no electricity let alone the internet. They also looked at their own situation where, in many cases, students at home are using more sophisticated technology than they can use at school. Peter McCarthy-Ward, BT Retail regional director for the East of England, said: "The students really threw themselves into this as the day went on, and they all learned a lot about the role of technology in today's world for both themselves and those in the third world. "BT is always keen to help schools run these sorts of events, which are great ways for us to get closer to the community. These events were especially good because this was the first time we have run such sessions in Hertfordshire, in the West of the region.”
