Sports day gets a lift from BT

A community sports day in County Antrim will be a lot more exciting following a cash injection from BT.

That’s the view of the BT engineer who helped to attract the financial boost for Glenravel Festival Committee in Ballymena, which each year holds a huge sports day for the local community.

Kieran Hughes successfully applied for a grant for the committee through the Community Champions scheme, which supports and rewards the voluntary work of BT people who commit time, energy and talent to the community.

The engineer, who works in Ballymena, is the chairman of Glenravel Festival Committee, which received a cash injection of more than £400 through the scheme.

He said: “I have been a volunteer with the committee for ten years and give 30 hours of my time per month. Being rewarded by my employer for my voluntary work is a great feeling. This award provides twice the recognition, as seeing the community connect and grow through my group’s activities is an enormous reward in itself.

“It’s great that BT encourages employees to get involved with voluntary work, as it is both enjoyable and fulfilling. All of us here at the committee are really grateful for the award received through BT Community Champions.”

He said the cash grant of £425 from BT would make a real difference to the group’s community sports day. The committee would now be able to hire extra sports and activities equipment for the sports day, making it a much more exciting event.

Meanwhile, the next application round for BT Community Champions closes on 9 October. Visit the website for more information.
