Cash buys new rugby balls

For a rugby club that has just spent £350,000 on refurbishing and extending its clubhouse, a £500 donation from BT may seem small beer.

But Nick Olsen is chuffed to bits that the company awarded him the maximum grant permissible under the BT Community Champions award scheme.

Nick is chairman of New Milton Rugby Club in Hampshire and he has been able to use the cash to buy some essential new kit for the club’s mini and junior section.

He said: “The award came just at the right time. Making the improvements to our clubhouse took up most of our reserves, so BT’s money has helped us to buy some new rugby balls for the kids to train and play with.

“The company has been really good to us over the years. Previous cash awards have contributed to us being able to train some of our coaches in sports first aid and to buy a secure container for all our equipment. It has made a big difference to us.”

Nick, a BT Operate field manager’s assistant who moved from Wales to New Milton 12 years ago, first got involved with the rugby club through his son, James, who started playing in the under-sevens. This year he’ll be turning out for the under-16s.

The club’s senior side plays in the first division of the Hampshire League and New Milton has recently been voted the county’s most friendly club to visit by members of the Hampshire Referees’ Society.
