Cash for community volunteers

Thirty-one community and charity organisations across the Eastern region have received cash grants totalling £6,545 from BT to support their voluntary community work as part of the BT Community Champions programme.

Groups in the region who have benefited from an award include Deben Swimming Club in Woodbridge, Bovingdon Under-18s Football Club in Hemel Hempstead, the Alpine Ski Team in Luton, Sandringham Community Jazz Band in St Albans and Mercator Explorer Scout Unit in Southend-On-Sea.

BT wideband planner Toby Dando from Southend, who volunteers as explorer scout leader with the Mercator scouts, said: “I have been a volunteer at Mercator for 18 years and give 70 hours of my time per month.

“Being rewarded by my employer for my voluntary work is a great feeling. This award provides twice the recognition, as seeing the community connect and grow through my group’s activities is an enormous reward in itself.

“All of us at Mercator are really grateful for the award of £500, which will enable us to purchase new camping and hiking equipment and help to subsidise unit trips used for training and awards.”

Review for the next round of awards closes on 9 October. To find out how you can apply, visit the website for more information.
