St Hilda’s church – important part of local heritage

Middlesbrough business improvement practitioner Stewart Burton is helping to keep an historic church a focal point of his local community.

Stewart is involved with the visitors’ centre at St Hilda’s church in Hartlepool. He said: “It’s a 12th century grade one listed building and is of particular importance in the Christian heritage of the region, as St Hilda herself was Abbess of the monastery in Hartlepool in the 7th century before leaving to set up the monastery at Whitby.”

For the past four years, Stewart has received support from the BT Community Champions scheme - and this year is no exception. Stewart was awarded £500, which will go towards the development of a professionally-designed website for the visitors’ centre.

“This will hopefully encourage a wider range and greater number of people to come and visit us - which, in turn, should lead to us increasing our income and so be able to open our doors more frequently,” said Stewart. “We want to give even more people in the community - and beyond - the opportunity to use our facilities.”
