More grants for volunteers

Thirty-four more community and charity organisations across the South East have been given grants by BT to support the voluntary work done by people working for the company.

They shared a total of £7,205 handed out by the BT Community Champions scheme in the latest round of awards designed to recognise and reward the voluntary work done by BT employees in their spare time.

Among those to benefit this time round are Spelthorne Neighbourhood Watch in Staines, Mid-Sussex Amateur Radio Society in Burgess Hill and Thatcham Tornadoes Football Club.

Graham Bartlett, a BT customer service engineer in Thatcham, who is chairman and under-13s manager at the Tornadoes, said: “I have been involved with the club for 16 years and give around 60 hours of my time to it each month.

“It’s great that BT encourages employees to get involved with voluntary work as it is both enjoyable and fulfilling.

“All at the club are really grateful for the award from BT. The £500 grant will make a real difference to our group and will mean that we are able to purchase new materials to improve trainers’ knowledge and skills.”

All BT employees who have participated in voluntary work for more than 12 months can apply to become a BT Community Champion. Successful applicants receive a cash grant of up to £500 or BT-branded sports kit for their group. The next review closes on 9 October.
