Happiness is cheque shaped

cheque presentation

Rob Simmons, Simon Hasted and Tim Agates hand over the giant cheque

Happy days are definitely here again for the pre-school group at Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames.

They have just been given a £1,000 donation by Openreach as part of its First Mile education programme with children’s charity I CAN which aims to improve communication skills among pre-school children.

Henley customer service engineer Rob Simmons, who has a daughter at the Happy Days pre-school and a son who used to go there, had applied for the funding on the basis of “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”.

He said: “I read about the scheme and thought I may as well put in an application, but I didn’t really expect to get anything. I even told the school that. So when I later told them that Openreach had decided to donate £1,000, they were as flabbergasted as me.”

Rob and his manager, Tim Agates, joined Thameswey general manager Simon Hasted to present the giant cheque which will be used to buy a laptop, digital camera, various musical instruments and some special needs toys.

Simon told the gathering of staff, children and parents: “We try to put money back into the community, especially when it comes to communications as that is our field.

“It is lovely to be here today and hear how the money will be spent.”
