Advertising could be targeted by using information signalled from mobile phones and other handheld devices

Researchers from BT and Telecom Italia will be at BT Centre in London later this month to give the first public demonstration of a joint project looking at the use of self-organisation and nature-inspired computing.

The Cascadas consortium, which includes a number of research organisations and universities, is developing an autonomic component-based framework to support new internet-based services using applications that are capable of automatically adapting to change - without the need for human intervention.

It’s one example of research currently being carried out around the world into how artificial life - the incorporation of naturally-occurring biological processes into computer-based systems - can be used to manage communications.

One of those involved in heading up the Cascadas project is Fabrice Saffre from BT’s centre for information and security systems research in the group chief technology office.

“The result will be a system aimed directly at the individual,” said Fabrice. “If you’re walking through a crowded shopping mall, for instance, it will be able to direct tailored advertising through your personal handheld device, based on your particular interests.”

The demonstration will show how computer systems will be able to sense the make-up of a crowd through information signalled from mobile phones and other handheld devices. This would be used to assess common interests - and the companies that might gain most from advertising to that particular audience.

Communication with other computers would follow to “auction” advertising time among competing companies - the winner’s advert would then show on a giant screen. All this would happen within a split second - without the involvement of a single human being.

Fabrice said: “It opens up all kinds of possibilities - for the individual, for business and for companies like BT.”

Anyone interested in attending the demonstration - on 28 October - can register online.
