Tony Wenlock is gearing up for the Twin Peaks race and is hoping that BT people across Wales might join him.
The main aim of the race is to raise funds so that Aberystwyth Athletics Club can get an all-weather running track built, and to then support an annual contribution towards the upkeep of the track. “To lay the track will cost in the region of £75,000 and to keep it in tip top condition, a contribution of £7,000 a year will need to be generated,” said the BT Global Services account planner. Tony said a number of people, such as university students, would also use the running track, which could be sited at Penweddig School in the town. “The school already has a grass track but that is no use in a wet summer like we’ve just had,” he added. The Twin Peaks race involves running up two hills at the north and south of the town on a circuit that takes in the whole of the promenade. It is six and a half miles in total, with half of the race on road and half on track. “There are steep climbs but all ages can take part. We’ve had an 84-year-old take part and children can also do the race, though they do one peak only,” added Tony. This year Aberystwyth Athletics Club marks its golden anniversary, so Tony says it would be good to get the running track moving! It is the third year that Aberystwyth Athletics Club has taken part in the race. After moving to the town three years ago from Essex, Tony decided to get involved straight away. “We want to make this one of the great classic races of Wales - in the league of the famous Race the Train event which attracts about 1,700 runners.” There will be between 85-100 runners tackling the slopes on Sunday 12 October, so Tony has put out an appeal for any BT colleagues who might be up for a challenge to join him and help raise vital funds. “We won’t raise the £7,000 but it will be a start and it will be good for the town. Although the race is sponsored, there will be prizes for the fastest man and fastest woman on the day.” “It’s an enjoyable challenge for singles, teams, serious and non-serious runners,” said Tony, who has run 13 marathons. He took up running ten years ago and says he has never felt fitter. “When I started I lost three and a half stones in weight and running is a way of life now,” he said.
