Wide-eyed teenagers Chris Ellison, David Harvey, Michael Hoey, Ann Bush, Rob Schnaar, James Penfold, Mike Magee and Jamie Smith joined BT 20 years ago.
Two decades on they celebrated by meeting up in the pub they frequented in their early days, on the same date they joined BT - 5 September. They were among an intake of 15 school leavers who joined West End District that year as TTA’s. They joined an engineering apprenticeship and were destined to graduate as T2A’s, but in their second year the scheme changed to TACT and they emerged as technical officers. “It was a great experience,” said Chris. “We worked in every department in West End district - marketing, HR, finance, sales, billing, customer service, as well as learning cabling, frames and how to climb poles. We experienced the width and breadth of BT and chose a specialism at the end of our third year.” Chris chose information technology and is now a network design and management specialist in BT Global Services. David is an IT planning engineer, Michael a commercial manager, Ann is a bid manager and Rob is a transformation manager. The other three have since left BT. Rob works in TV production, Jamie owns his own business and Mike is an operations manger for Global Crossing. If you were part of the TTA intake in West End District in 1988 and would like to meet up, e-mail Chris.
