Richard’s ironman feat
Friday October 10th 2008.   Posted: 09:30
Seasoned triathlete Richard Bushell has completed the 2008 Ironman UK, swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and then running 26.2 miles in a non-stop 12 hours and 24 minutes - and raised £900 for Cancer Research UK.
Richard was among 1,300 athletes who started the race. He finished a very credible 444th overall and 86th in his 40-45 years age group. The Ironman was held at Sherborne Castle in Dorset. “In comparison, the Olympics triathlon is a one mile swim, 25 mile bike ride and six mile run,” said Richard, who is head of repair operations for mobile operators in BT Wholesale and works at City Place, Gatwick. “This was my first ironman, but not my first triathlon. I’ve been gradually building up through triathlons and a half ironman last year. It’s the triathletes’ Everest.” The swim, two laps of the spectacular elbow-shaped Sherborne Lake, was followed by three laps of a circular route along country roads between the castle and Dorchester, then three laps of a run into the forest around Sherborne. “The other difference with the Olympics is that triathletes don’t have support teams. We set our own bikes and running gear up and the race organisers provide drinks,” said Richard. “Over the last couple of years I’ve seen family members, close friends and colleagues suffering from cancer. Raising money for research into the causes of cancer is the personal challenge I chose to support them, but it pales into significance beside the challenges they face.”
