A customer service engineer from Truro is getting ready for the run of his life next year, when he takes part in the 2009 London Marathon.

Guy Daniels is one of a team of eight friends with no previous running experience who are donning their trainers to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

They will do so in memory of close friend Lucy Whitfeld, who died of the disease in April. She is the wife of Guy’s friend Scott, who will also be taking to the streets of the capital for the gruelling endurance race.

Guy said: “When Lucy died we all decided we needed to do something in her memory and raise money for a related charity at the same time. So we’ve been working at getting fit and I’ve been training hard to make sure I’m prepared for next spring.”

As part of the build-up, Guy recently completed the Truro half-marathon in 1hr, 57minutes.

He said: “It was a challenging course for us to complete as our first major running event due to the number of hills involved but everybody pushed through it and should be proud of themselves.”

The team hopes to raise around £20,000 for Cancer Research UK and, if they hit their target, they also plan to enter the New York Marathon in November 2009.
