Top Belfast businesses honoured

BT has helped to recognise business titans and successful business start-ups in Belfast. The company teamed up with Belfast Media Group to honour Belfast’s Business Top 50 at a ceremony in the Great Hall at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.

Margaret Ritchie, Northern Ireland’s minister for social development, was guest speaker at the event.

“I am delighted to be here to celebrate the success and contribution to our economy of this year’s Top 50 nominees," she said.

"It is particularly pleasing to be recognising both multinational companies and social economy enterprises that serve local people in some of the most disadvantaged districts of the city.”

Among those recognised in the Top 50 were aircraft maker Bombardier, hotelier Bill Wolsey, restaurateur Michael Deane, UTV chief John McCann, Shankill Mirror managing editor John McVicar, culture entrepreneur Rita Duffy and social entrepreneur Gerry Ward.

Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, managing director of Belfast Media Group, said: “This is an inspiring list of high achievers who are exemplars of how entrepreneurial zeal is driving the new Belfast.”

Michael Cunningham, head of sales with BT Business in Northern Ireland, said: “These awards bring together local government, business experts and owner-managers to celebrate achievements and discuss the triggers and barriers to long-term successes for the small business community.

“BT endeavours to provide practical ideas for sustaining local businesses and supporting growth through providing the services they most value and need.

“Together, through these awards, we are capable of making a real difference to thousands of small businesses by helping to inspire and create further opportunities for local entrepreneurs looking to pursue their ambitions.”

Also honoured by BT for the best use of information communication technology in business was entrepreneur Mark Finlay of Barnabas Ventures.
