GAA competitions receive BT boost

BT has extended its sponsorship of competitions run by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ulster colleges.

Under the deal, BT will sponsor 29 of the 35 competitions organised by the GAA Ulster Colleges organisation for a further three years. The competitions are played across nine counties.

Danny Murphy, secretary of the Ulster Colleges, said: “BT’s support has been instrumental in underpinning the remarkable progress of the competitions in recent years and the Ulster Colleges organisation has enjoyed significant growth since BT first became involved as a sponsor in 2001.

“Through its generous support, BT has enabled the colleges committee to expand its provision - with the number of affiliated schools increasing to 47 and the total number of competitions growing to 35.”

Due to the increase in the number of schools participating, Ulster Colleges now offers a full range of competitions at various capability levels in both hurling and Gaelic football - enabling every school to compete at an appropriate level.

The number of hurling competitions and the number of schools which now field hurling teams has increased within the past decade. This represents a rate of progress which is unmatched anywhere in Ireland, said Danny.

Peter Morris, head of BT's consumer unit in Ireland, said: “BT welcomes the opportunity once again to renew our sponsorship of the Ulster Colleges competitions and looks forward to strengthening the existing relationship that has been built up with the GAA over the past number of years. I would like to wish all the competing teams well in the forthcoming competitions.”
