Nations throughout the world are coming together today (Friday) to mark World Diabetes Day - designed to promote global diabetes awareness.
The day’s key focus for 2008 is the impact diabetes has on children. A typical case is BT’s Diego Perona, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of four. BT is making its own international contribution to diabetes awareness, with BT locations in many countries organising activities and roadshows in support of both BT’s current Work Fit - What’s your risk? diabetes campaign and World Diabetes Day. The BT Global Services part of the Work Fit programme is being co-ordinated by Mike Wagland, who said: “Activities include Wii Fit interactive keep fit sessions at BT locations in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. “We are also offering healthy eating advice, arranging presentations and providing newsletters, posters and online information about diabetes.” BT people in Belgium have an opportunity, too, to hear a talk by Olympic sprint athlete Kim Gevaert, who has written a book on good nutrition and the type of foods beneficial to certain activities. Mike added: “In Italy, a discussion will be held in the Milan auditorium and broadcast as a web conference for the rest of the country. The USA will be promoting awareness of the Work Fit diabetes website through the BT Americas bulletin and publishing a banner on the Americas home page. “In several countries, we’ll also be offering people the chance to take a simple test to check their blood glucose level, which is the key indicator that someone might have diabetes.” More information - If this article has raised any questions for you or caused any concerns, you can call Diabetes UK’s Careline on 0845 120 2960 (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm); e-mail Careline or Careline Scotland; or visit the Work Fit - What’s your risk? and Diabetes UK websites. The International Diabetes Federation can provide more information for people outside the UK.
- You can see if you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes by completing a two-minute online assessment test. Anyone taking the test will need to know their waist measurement in inches to answer one of the questions - centimetres can be converted to inches here.
