Yell is to shed jobs in the UK, the USA and Spain

International directories business Yell has announced it is to cut around 1,300 jobs over the next 18 months.

Jobs will go in the UK, the USA and Spain. Chief executive John Condron said the company was actively working on cost-reduction programmes as global economic trends show no sign of improving.

In a statement about its UK operation, Yell said: “Yell has recently carried out a strategic review to support the reshaping of the business for the future in terms of its scale, effectiveness and focus.

“This is aimed at supporting the continued transformation of our business within a highly competitive and changing market environment, and at a time of strong global economic pressures.

“In view of these challenges, very regrettably, we are entering into consultation with our people on a proposal for up to 350 redundancies across the UK, out of a total UK workforce of 3,860, and involving the majority of our departments.

“Our two current Reading sites - our UK head office at Queens Walk and premises at Bridge Street - and our Slough office are included in the proposal.”

Andy Kerr, deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: “While job losses are always a last resort, CWU and Yell are jointly committed to achieving these job reductions by the use of the recently agreed restructuring policy which emphasises the use of voluntary redundancy and redeployment.”

Dave Johnson, CWU national official with responsibility for Yell members, said: “All parties are committed to handling the consultation process as quickly as possible in order to minimise uncertainty. This will allow for regular and timely communication with those affected.”
