Help is at hand for the elderly

Volunteers are needed to help take calls from older people and their families

BT has teamed up with the Age Concern and Help the Aged charities in Northern Ireland to provide a freefone helpline for older people concerned about rising fuel costs and their health and wellbeing this winter.

BT is providing the helpline - 0800 085 0185 - each Wednesday from 2-4pm from the 5th floor at its Riverside Tower building in Belfast.

The phone service provides information on things such as how to stay warm at home, energy-saving tips to save money, and how to eat properly, stay healthy and active through the winter months.

However, volunteers are still needed to help take calls from older people, their families or carers and give them information about where they can get help.

Training - lasting 30 minutes - and a background briefing will be provided, and experienced call advisors will also be on hand during the helpline opening hours.

Anyone interested in becoming a helpline volunteer should e-mail Jackie Magee to register for a Wednesday afternoon slot between now and 25 March next year.
