Technology call for India

Allen Ma

Allen Ma says India must catch up in global branding and speed up the flow of goods

Agility, branding and innovation - combined with the use of green technology - are the key to ensuring successful economic growth in India, according to BT Asia Pacific president Allen Ma.

He was speaking in a debate at the World Economic Forum in India where there were calls for the country to introduce more training in the use of technology to boost manufacturing growth.

India currently represents 1.1 per cent of global manufacturing. But panellists at the session agreed that, in order to enlarge this, provide employment to a growing population and become a world player, technology is essential. They said that while India has a huge talent base, it lags behind in innovation and in capacity to take risks.

The discussion came during a session entitled: Big Bets on Technology and Manufacturing at the summit in New Delhi

Ashwani Kumar, minister of state for the department of industrial policy and promotion at India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said India needs to increase its manufacturing growth from nine per cent to 13 per cent. So far, only nine per cent of India’s manufacturing is produced by technology, he added.

“What is needed is training in the use of technology and high technology,” he said. “It’s clear we need technology to improve.”

In his address, Allen said to be a key player in the world market India needs to catch up in global branding and speed up the flow of goods. He pinpointed agility, branding and innovation as the “key contributors to success in the future”.

Allen also called for more investment in green technology, such as fuel-efficient vehicles and environment tools, saying: “India should be thinking along these lines.”
