Only 18 per cent of young women seek a career in communications and IT

Adastral Park’s apprentices and innovators are in the spotlight - thanks to a series of video clips which aim to inspire young people to think differently about technology.

The video clips are featured on the new Big Ambition website developed by E-skills UK - the sector skills council for communications and IT.

The aim of the website is to inspire 14 to 19-year-olds to think differently about technology - and to help them gain an understanding of the vast range of options available to them for a career in technology and technology-intensive businesses.

BT is represented on the E-skills telecoms and IT industry board by BT Wholesale chief executive Sally Davis, while Pat Hughes, programme manager in BT Innovate, is a member of the Revitalise IT employer steering group.

Pat said: “Our target is to attract more than 45,000 students to this site to use and engage with the materials. The site is going to continue to evolve over the next couple of months and we are constantly on the lookout for new content and examples of technology in action.”

Applications to relevant technical degree courses have fallen by 50 per cent since 2003, said Pat. “As a sector, we have a massive gender imbalance, with only 18 per cent of young women seeking a career in communications and IT,” he said.

“Research by E-skills has shown that a shortage of information, advice and guidance regarding the sector and what we can offer young people is a major factor in this.

“Thanks are due to all the BT men and women who gave up their time to help make these videos - for playing their part in helping to inspire the next generation of technology innovators.”
