BT people can support the Congo appeal by making donations online or by phone

BT is supporting an emergency appeal launched today (Thursday) for people affected by the recent upsurge of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The company is hosting the online platform for donations and is providing telephone network management support for the appeal launched by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) - an umbrella organisation of 13 humanitarian aid charities including Save the Children, Oxfam and the British Red Cross.

Beth Courtier, head of BT’s charity programme, said: “The BT e-Donate platform has been built to allow us to respond immediately to disaster appeals such as this. Any BT people who want to contribute to this new appeal can do so online.

“I'm very conscious that this appeal comes less than a week after our involvement in the record-breaking BBC Children in Need telethon. I really appreciate the efforts of our BT people that will make this appeal for Congo a real success.”

Launching the DEC Congo (DR) Crisis Appeal, chief executive Brendan Gormley said more than 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to escape the fighting in recent weeks - adding to more than one million already displaced as a result of the conflict.

Agencies that make up the DEC are already delivering life-saving food, water, shelter and emergency medical supplies to those affected - but the scale of the crisis means much more is needed, he said.

Donations can also be made via credit card to the new donation line on 0370 60 60 900 or via any high street Post Office or bank. The new number is cheaper than the previous 0870 line - it costs the same to call this number as a standard landline 01/02 number, even from a mobile phone.
