Volunteers from BT Global Services are planning to spend the next few months getting in trim for even tougher times next March.

They are preparing for a trek through the Brazilian rainforest in support of UNICEF - BT’s global charity partner.

The five-day trek is over 125km and part of a year-long fundraising drive for Inspiring Young Minds Brazil - a campaign which aims to raise £140,000 to support projects in disadvantaged communities in three Brazilian cities which use sport to engage with young people.

The intrepid trekkers are due to leave on 9 March and one volunteer, Andrew Bullock - from the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Latin America team - said: “The trek is over undulating ground with very few flat sections - literally up mountains, wading through rivers, swimming in waterfalls, clearing our way through jungle paths and even through a 376m cave.

“We have been sent a training schedule and I have started gym work and jogging whenever I can.”

One of 35 trekkers, Andrew has already hit his £2,500 target. His co-trekkers are raising money in all sorts of ways - from coffee mornings, mini-treks and car washing to packing bags in supermarkets.

EMEA and Latin America president Luis Alvarez, who launched Inspiring Young Minds Brazil in April, said: “The Inspiring Young Minds trek in Brazil has triggered a lot of enthusiasm among BT people. This will be a fantastic adventure for them and the money they raise will make a real difference to thousands of Brazilian children.

“We are very close to meeting our £140,000 fundraising target this year, and more than £125,000 has already been raised for 'sports for development' projects. All thanks to BT people.”
