Mission to find laptop for youngster

When Openreach customer service engineer Peter Grey flies out to Belarus in February or March next year, he hopes to take with him a laptop computer as a gift for the daughter of the family who hosted him last time he was there.

But first he has to find one. “I’d like to hear from anyone who might have an old laptop they no longer need,” he said. “I plan to give it as a present to a little girl for her to use for educational purposes.”

Peter, who works in Gravesend, is chairman of the north Kent-based charity Concern for Chernobyl Children and is going out to Belarus to sign the necessary forms and paperwork to allow 27 Belarusian children and three adult interpreters to visit the UK next July for a month-long recuperative holiday.

Millions of youngsters in the country are still affected by serious health problems resulting from the nuclear plant explosion at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in April 1986, and benefit hugely from the short breaks that Peter’s charity and others arrange each year.

If you can help Peter to track down a laptop, e-mail him or call him on 07802 230412.
