Steady Seb heads the pack

BT yacht

Seb Josse has completed more than 5,000 miles of the Vendee Globe course

Seb Josse in his BT-sponsored yacht has established himself as the leader of the Vendee Globe solo round-the-world race as he negotiates the South Atlantic Ocean.

Seb has held on to the lead he regained last Friday and is now around 25 miles ahead of his closest rival, Loick Peyron, and 44 miles ahead of third-placed yachtsman Yann Eliès as the leaders bid to reach the first of eight so-called ice gates - virtual lines of latitude that the competitors must respect.

Seb was the first competitor to put the St Helena high pressure system behind him and he is now benefiting from the long-awaited westerly winds and travelling at close to 15 knots.

Never in the history of the Vendee Globe has the fleet been so tightly packed together after 5,000 miles of sailing.

The race - described by the organisers as “the Everest of the seas” - began from Les Sables d'Olonne on the west coast of France on 9 November and the competitors are due to finsh there three months later.

You can follow Seb’s progress in the race and send him an e-mail online.
