Passengers can use mobile phones underground at five Glasgow stations
|
Passengers using Glasgow’s subway network are now able to use their mobile phones on underground platforms.
It follows a link-up between Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), mobile network operator O2 and transmission provider Arqiva. The service is now available in the five busiest stations on the subway network - Buchanan Street, St Enoch, Govan, Partick and Hillhead - and means O2 passengers can make calls, text, send picture messages, e-mail and access mobile internet while on station concourses and platforms. Gordon Maclennan, SPT assistant chief executive for operations, said: “This is a real breakthrough for us as the new technology opens up new lines of communications.” O2 chief technology officer Derek McManus said Glasgow said the launch of the new technology comes in time for the busy festive season. “Shoppers in town will be able to phone or text friends and family about presents and meeting up, as well as arranging to meet for nights out,” he said. - BT is supplying the mobile technology for live trials on the London Underground, including one at St James’s Park tube station where staff on the underground platforms can make calls on their mobiles or surf the net.
