Region feels the wind for change

People in the North East have been taking a closer look at BT’s innovative proposals to install wind turbines.
BT Wind for Change, a two-day public exhibition, was held at Elwick and at Wolviston to give local people the opportunity to view and discuss the proposals. A site at Red Gap, near Elwick, around six kilometres south west of Hartlepool, west of the A19 and north of the A689 Sedgefield to Hartlepool road has been identified as a potential location for the wind power development. BT Wind for Change is part of the company’s wider environment and climate change programme. If given the go-ahead, the nine turbines will cleanly and efficiently develop around 20 megawatts of power, delivering the equivalent amount of energy to that used by an estimated 10,000 typical households. This is one of a number of sites that BT is evaluating throughout the UK. Andy Riley, head of partnership development for BT’s wind farms project, said “I’m very excited to be involved with BT’s innovative Wind for Change programme, which aims to deliver around 25 per cent of BT’s current UK electricity sustainably by 2016. “Many people care about climate change and I hope I can rely on the continued support of BT colleagues in the local area.”
