Making an impact - award-winning Ken at the BT Tower
|
This year’s BT Chairman’s Awards have seen a double win for BT Operate technician Ken Evans.
Ken seized both the top prize - the outstanding achievement award - and the community and culture award for his voluntary work with the Neath and District Talking Magazine for the Blind. Since 1985, Ken has helped produce and distribute a free talking newspaper that now reaches nearly 270 visually-impaired people. He plans to use his £5,000 award to fund the transfer of the paper from cassette to CD format. He said: “I’m stunned - I didn’t expect this sort of recognition. Some of the projects other volunteers work on reach more into the community but this has a big impact on a small community. And it’s something I enjoy doing." Ken was one of six finalists presented with awards by BT chairman Mike Rake at the BT Tower in London. Impressed BT Operate engineering manager Ivor McClure received the youth award for his work with a charity that encourages youngsters to participate in the performing arts; while BT phone book and distribution worker Tim Harpin - who helps disabled people learn to sail - won the sports award. The education, development and awareness award went to Edward Cole, of BT’s intellectual property rights department, whose management skills have helped charity Sierra Leonean Adventists Abroad keep a hospital open. And two winners shared the emerging impact award. Madrid-based Ana Ramos - an IT security manager for BT Global Services - was recognised for her work with Balcania, a charity that provides humanitarian aid to Albania. BT Operate location manager Bernie Allen was voted a winner for his involvement with Mid-Life Crisis - a rock band that supports charities and community groups. Mike - who selected the finalists himself - told the volunteers: “You make a real difference in your communities - both individually and collectively.”
