High Touch to learning

Carla Thomas

Carla Thomas pioneered High Touch in the service operations professional community

BT is adopting a new approach to learning and development - with the introduction of a programme designed for people from the company’s professional communities.

The High Touch programme has been piloted across the world by BT professional communities (PCs) covering service operations, business support specialists and sales. Now, it is to be launched across all the company’s PCs.

The programme is aimed at specially-selected candidates from the PCs and focuses on the use of new technologies - such as podcasting, Tiddlywiki, SharePoint, RSS and MyBT - to enable people to become more agile in their jobs.

The service operations PC - led by Carla Thomas and comprising more than 6,300 people across 28 countries - has been pioneering the High Touch approach with a series of learning events designed to develop people more deeply on a key subject.

Collaborative technologies

Thirty participants from the community joined a 10-week course focused on business problem solving and financial management. Learning activities ranged from masterclasses delivered by subject experts to online discussions and regular Live Meeting sessions.

Countries engaged in the pilot have included China, the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain and the USA.

Carla said: “All the learning activities in the High Touch programme are zero-cost and conducted outside the classroom, taking advantage of some of the new collaborative technologies that BT has recently invested in.”
