BT on competition challenges

Ian discussed the challenges of rolling out broadband

Regulation and intense competition in the UK telecoms market were two of the topics under discussion at a meeting between BT executives and the chairman of the European Regulators Group (ERG).

BT chief executive Ian Livingston met Matthias Kurth, president of the German Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Post and Railway - who is also currently chairman of the ERG - during a visit to London for a meeting with Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.

“Ian emphasised how competition had sharpened BT’s operations and customer responsiveness,” said Phil Stubbington, of BT Global Services’ regulatory team, who was also at the meeting.

“He contrasted the situation in the UK - where Openreach provides access and backhaul services to all operators on an equivalent basis - with the situation in Germany, where BT continues to find Deutsche Telekom unwilling to provide bottleneck services to other operators on the same terms as it enjoys itself.”

A good moment

Phil said Ian also discussed how BT views the challenges of rolling out broadband services to the whole population of the UK, whether over the copper infrastructure or over fibre.

He said: “As the ERG is currently working on a study of the conditions for business services in Europe, this was an extremely good moment to get the BT message across to the ERG chairman.

“Matthias left with a much clearer picture of how BT - unlike many other European incumbents - welcomes the challenges of a richly competitive market.”
