Recognised for their community service - Vic and Vicki at Downing Street
|
A past winner in the government’s Respect Award for Taking a Stand - BT’s Vicki Kapoor Sood - has again found herself at 10 Downing Street receiving a community award before an audience that included the Prime Minister.
A business support specialist in BT’s public sector operations, Vicki was first recognised in 2007 for her success in establishing and managing an effective Neighbourhood Watch scheme to tackle young troublemakers in her home area of Stanwell, near Heathrow Airport. Now, she has been nominated for another award for her contribution to the government’s Community Crime Fighters programme. But, even more importantly for Vicki, her presence at the Downing Street event also signalled the presentation of an award to Stanwell police officer Vic Smith. She explained: “I was asked by the Home Office to nominate someone in my community who I believe provides an exceptional level of service in tackling neighbourhood crime or anti-social behaviour, or who supports others who need help. Winners “I nominated crime reduction officer Vic for an award because he’s a key element in the relationship between police, the local authority and the community. He’s always contactable, always willing to assist and is always supportive. He’s a real people’s person. “I was delighted when my nomination was accepted - out of hundreds - and we were both invited to Downing Street.” Along with winners from all over the UK, Vicki and Vic were presented with awards signed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Home Secretary Alan Johnson and government crime advisor Louise Casey. Still proactive in her community - and frequently asked to advise on setting up Neighbourhood Watch programmes elsewhere - Vicki said: “The most interesting part of the day was meeting the other winners and hearing the stories they have to tell. They confirm it’s possible for everyone to make a difference.” | At Downing Street - Prime Minister Gordon Brown, centre left, with some of the prize winners, including Vicki, front left |
