Richard was moved by the story of Liam's death

BT Operate chief financial officer Richard Cameron quit smoking and took to his bike in preparation for a monster of a marathon.
Richard - together with group security director Mark Hughes - was inspired to take part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon to raise funds for the Liam Henderson Fund. The fund was set up by BT Operate’s John Henderson after his son was run down while making his way to the Scotland v Holland game in Glasgow. A man is now serving a life sentence for his murder. “Giving up smoking was the easy part of the training,” said Richard who, together with Mark - and BT Group administration manager Bernard White, who ran the 10km event - has raised almost £6,000 for the fund. Loss Richard met John at a recognition event and heard how the fund was helping young people in the Wick and Newmachar areas achieve their sporting ambitions. “As a parent myself, you cannot imagine anything more devastating than the loss of one of your children,” said Richard. “John told me his story and I thought it was really moving. I was impressed by his coping mechanism - making a difference to the lives of other young people through sport.” Richard travelled from his Hertfordshire home to Inverness for the marathon - “a tough, hilly course in the highlands of Scotland,” he said. “The last 10 miles were very difficult but there was no thought of giving up,” said Richard. John, an aerial rigger who has worked for BT for more than 35 years, said: “We will always carry memories of Liam but he left a lot of memories in other people’s hearts and people wanted to do something for him. “With help from people like these guys, we can do something good and point kids in a different direction from one they might have been heading in - and sport’s an important way to do that.”
