X Factor final breaks records

Joe McElderry

The 10 million votes cast during The X Factor final set a new UK record

As the UK’s new singing sensation Joe McElderry toasts his success as the winner of The X Factor, BT is also celebrating after the programme smashed telephone voting records.

The final, screened live on ITV1 on Sunday night, relied on BT’s recorded information distribution equipment (RIDE) platform for viewers to record their telephone votes in favour of Joe and his rival Olly Murs.

Jeremy Hallsworth, chief executive of BTagilemedia, BT’s participation media experts, said: “The 10 million phone votes cast was the largest ever recorded for a final.

“During the show, more than 219,000 votes were taken in a single minute - up 11 per cent on the previous best. And the busiest second saw an incredible 3,801 votes cast - a 13 per cent increase on the old record.

“Our customers at Harvest Media, talkbackTHAMES and ITV are absolutely delighted with this result - not only in terms of the volumes achieved, but also the flawless support delivered by the teams at BT. This remarkable achievement was the result of a fantastic amount of work across many areas of BT.”

Great credit

The RIDE interactive voice response platform, which is now used by all UK broadcasters for every major TV event, has been redeveloped over the last two years by BT Innovate & Design, to bring it into the 21st century network world and to create the higher capacity shows like this require.

“The new platform’s ability to set these records, whilst still delivering the quality, speed and accuracy needed for major live TV broadcasts, is a great credit to all those responsible for its development,” said Jeremy.

“There is also a huge amount of advance planning and on-the-night network management that goes into an event of this scale and everyone involved, including the network announcement centre and the Oswestry customer event management centre voice services team, should be very proud of these new records.

“Credit should also go to the implementation team at BTagilemedia, who are the customer facing part of BT for these events, in advance and on the night, and who ensure that the customer’s needs and the requirements of BT and the wider UK phone network, are as closely aligned as possible. It’s not always an easy task with a live TV broadcast.

“Once again, BT has been seen at its best.”
