Gary Shainberg: BT stepped up to the mark at Le Web this year

Delegates at one of Europe’s largest internet conferences had “flawless” wi-fi connection this year - thanks to BT.
More than 2,400 participants from 50 countries were in Paris for the Le Web 2009 conference in Paris which focuses on net-based businesses and technologies. “For the past three years Le Web has not had the fast, reliable wi-fi that its attendees demand,” said Gary Shainberg, BT Innovate & Design vice-president of technology and innovation support. “This year, the conference organisers brought in BT to make absolutely certain they had the connectivity they needed.” The network was provided jointly by BT and cloud-based wireless networking company Meraki. “I decided to use Meraki based on my prior experience of using it for big events, which made me very comfortable it would be able to deliver,” said Gary. Monster challenge BT had overall responsibility for the network and infrastructure, while Meraki provided 26 high-speed access points and the Meraki Enterprise Cloud Controller to manage the system. Gary said: “This was a monster challenge which BT and Meraki stepped up to the mark and met.” During the two-day conference, the wi-fi network served more than 2,500 clients using 2,937 devices over 6.5km of cable, with an internet connection carrying more than 665GB of data. Conference organiser Loic LeMeur said: “The theme for Le Web 2009 was The Real-Time Web and, in order to deliver that, we needed to make sure everyone could get online. People told us the wi-fi network was one of the best they’d seen.” And online marketing pioneer Tara Hunt said in her conference blog: “That wi-fi was flawless. Thanks go out to Gary, who worked with Meraki to make the mesh impeccable, and to Meraki, whose mesh network was so solid there wasn’t a single blip the entire conference.”
