Boost for Project Canvas

Family television

Project Canvas will deliver Freeview channels and on-demand content in a single service

Channel 4 and TalkTalk have confirmed they have signed up to join Project Canvas.

The multi-million pound collaboration by BT and others will deliver Freeview channels and on-demand content from the likes of the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and BT Vision in a single service.

While still subject to approval by the BBC Trust, Channel 4 and TalkTalk join BT, the BBC, ITV and Five in committing to the project - with ambitions to launch later next year.

Andy Baker, director of commercial and customer propositions for BT Vision, said: "It’s great that these new partners have joined the project to both further extend the exciting range of content available to customers and increase the number of customers that will be able to enjoy the full Project Canvas service.”

With internet-connected TV set to be the next major technological development in broadcasting, Channel 4 believes Project Canvas is critical to the long-term future of subscription-free TV.

Channel 4 director of strategy Gill Pritchard said: “Channel 4 has always been at the forefront of on-demand viewing and was the first broadcaster to make its content available on an on-demand basis when it launched 4oD in December 2006.

Accessibility

“Internet protocol TV is set to become the next generation of TV and, if Channel 4 is to continue to enhance its importance in a fully converged world, it is key to be part of driving Project Canvas.”

Project Canvas project director Richard Halton - speaking on behalf of partners BT, BBC, ITV and Five - said: “Project Canvas can help secure the future of free-to-air broadcasting, as well as create an opportunity for a wide range of public services and new commercial models to thrive through an open platform. We’re delighted that Channel 4 and TalkTalk have joined the project.”
