Mobile users in the UK are among the world's top texters

UK consumers are among the global leaders in the use of digital communications services, according to new research by Ofcom.

The communications regulator says consumers in the UK text more than any other country except the US - while the UK generally enjoys the lowest mobile and broadband prices.

UK consumers also make the third highest volume of landline calls in the world - and are responsible for the highest international increase in TV watching

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards says Ofcom's international communications market data report provides a snapshot of the £548bn communications market in the five years to 2008 in 12 major economies.

"This report shows that UK consumers have benefited from competition in the form of lower prices. Innovation means the UK is well placed in the take-up and availability of digital services," he said.

Well placed

The report looks at take-up, availability, pricing and use of broadband, landlines and mobiles, TV and radio in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the US, Canada, Japan, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland. Additionally, it considers the four fast-growing economies of Brazil, India, Russia and China.

Ofcom also says that, while overall broadband growth is slowing, over the five years to 2008 the UK had the second highest growth in broadband lines per person - 23 connections per 100 people - out of the 12 main economies considered in the report. Only the Netherlands had a higher rate of growth, at 25 connections per 100 people.

The UK leads the way in internet advertising, too - with research showing the internet accounts for nearly a quarter of total advertising spend.
