Openreach’s Alice Ryan has won the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) Apprentice of the Year Award.

“I am delighted to have won such an award,” she said. “I think it’s a true reflection on the BT apprenticeship scheme because it is the platform that has given me these opportunities to excel.”

The judges were looking for an ambitious career-oriented apprentice with a good work-life balance, and who also participates in activities that reflect well on their employer.

Alice - who frequently represents BT at events and to the media - chose the apprenticeship route instead of going to university.

Clear direction

But she is currently studying for a degree in telecoms and management in her spare time and is determined to make her mark in the company.

“The apprentice scheme has given me a clear direction for the future and I am very proud to represent BT,” she said. “The company really does reward enthusiasm.”

The runners-up for the award were:

  • Myles Neal from BT Retail, who was commended for his willingness to take on challenging tasks, coupled with his dedication to environmental causes

  • Will Osborne, a BT Operate power engineer who uses his engineering skills and knowledge to repair faults as efficiently as possible

  • Richard Fox from BT Global Services, who received a special merit for his contribution to the company’s Olympic sponsorship activities - built on his activities as a paralympian.
