BT’s Diane Finn will be speaking to students at Britain’s oldest girls’ school next week about careers in technology.
Diane - a former scholarship pupil at The Red Maids' School in Bristol - has been invited to talk at a conference being held to mark its 375th anniversary. “I’ll be speaking to sixth-form students from all over the south west of England at the conference, which is being held to encourage young women to consider careers in science and engineering,” said Diane. The conference is being led by former Red Maid girls Dr Alice Roberts, star of BBC’s Coast series, and Helen Fennell - the national winner of the Women in Science and Engineering Award. It is being held in conjunction with the WISE campaign - which aims to encourage women into science, engineering and construction careers. Fast-track scheme “I can recommend a career in technology,” said Diane. “I’m keen to get across the excitement and fast-paced challenging nature of the industry and the diversity of careers available.” Now a process expert within BT Operate’s transformation team, Diane moved into IT after studying biochemistry and working in the pharmaceutical industry. She explained: “Whilst taking a career break when my children were young, my husband bought me a Sinclair ZX81 computer to use as a hobby. “I found it incredibly interesting and it led to me joining IBM’s fast-track graduate scheme where I worked in the PC business until the late 1990s. “I then did a stint working on Centrica’s start-up telecoms business Onetel, before joining BT in 2005. “It’s lovely to be invited back to speak at my old school - my twin nieces are both pupils there, so I still have a connection with it.”
