Couple hitched despite hitches

Liz Colmer and Simon Merrick enjoyed the magical winter wedding they had planned - despite a catalogue of calamities that threatened to blight their big day.

Liz, BT Global Services regional deployment manager in the south, and BT Global Services deployment manager Simon, were married in the New Forest.

But, as the day approached, heavy snow fell in the area - creating hazardous conditions. And that was only the start of their problems.

Simon said: “What was destined to become literally a white wedding began to look like a cancelled one. There was a warning to motorists not to travel but, driving cautiously, we made it down from London.

“However, the next morning we learned the snow had made the church inaccessible so the service had to be switched to a church in the next village.”

Ink stain

The couple had to swiftly phone all the guests, the florist and the wedding car people to inform them of the change of venue.

There was more drama to come, with the suit hire company getting the wrong date for a fitting and two pairs of trousers were the wrong size.

“To top it all, on the morning of the wedding I noticed a big ink stain on the cuff of my shirt,” said Simon. “There was no time for a replacement so I folded the cuff the wrong way and no-one noticed.”

A 4x4 vehicle was on standby to take the bride to church but it wasn’t needed and Liz was able to travel in a 1956 Rolls Royce as planned - and the first wedding at the church in 25 years went smoothly.

Simon had proposed to Liz in front of 300 people at a fireworks display - so they rounded off their big day with indoor fireworks on the wedding cake.
