Taking young people to work

Mother and daughter

BT Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Week begins on 22 March

BT people in the UK are being invited to bring young people to work for a day next month to give them the chance to learn more about the world of work.

The company is opening its doors from Monday 22 March to Friday 26 March for BT Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Week.

Designed for 11 to 14-year-olds and open to BT people who are parents but also those that have nieces and nephews or grandchildren within this age range, the initiative is designed to help young people gain a much-needed insight into the workplace. Children of friends and neighbours are also welcome.

BT director of people and policy Caroline Waters said: “This is a great opportunity to show young people what a diverse and exciting company BT is and to help them understand the sheer range of careers that make up our industry.

“The experience will give these young people an opportunity to understand what it is like to work for a large business and provide inspiration for discussions about their future career aspirations.”

Prize draw

During the week BT will be running a number of co-ordinated events for young people in different locations, supported by champions in each line of business.

BT people will be encouraged to consider either joining one of these events, organising their own local event or arranging for young people to shadow them individually for the day.

More information and a pre-registration form for anyone who is interested in bringing a young person to work or helping to run an event is available online.

Caroline said: “Participating in this week is a real opportunity for BT people to volunteer their time to inspire young people about the opportunities that a career can offer them.

“The programme reinforces our support of the government’s Backing Young Britain initiative, which aims to help young people make the transition from education into work.”

Any BT people taking part in Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Week and registering their time will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win either £500 for their nominated charity or an iPod Touch.
