What makes a great Openreach Civil engineer?

Openreach engineers have diverse backgrounds, with varied experiences. We’re looking for people with a willingness to get stuck in, an ability to connect with people, and who enjoy a physically demanding role.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Happy working outdoors. Whether it’s glorious sunshine or bracing British weather, our Civil engineers are out supporting us to build our network.
  • Open to new technology. Nothing too scary and we’ll always support you, but you need to be comfortable using smart devices and ready to learn as new tools emerge.
  • Ready to give their best. The sort of person who always sees a job through and takes pride in doing it properly.
  • Physically fit. You don’t need to be a marathon runner, but will need to be fit enough to work in the highway, excavating and assisting in safely moving plant and kit.
  • Prepared to roll up their sleeves. Working in the great outdoors on our network means getting your hands dirty.
  • Able to manage their time as well as their workload. This is critical, our customers rely on us and we need individuals who are truly committed to delivering service.

Training was very well organised and informative, the trainers were very helpful and understanding treating everyone the same.

What do Civils teams do?

This isn’t an office job so you won’t be tied to one location. Instead you’ll be on the road, in the fresh air. You’ll be visiting lots of different places and working in all kinds of locations. You might find yourself working in quiet residential cul-de-sacs, busy roads or operating trenching machines across fields. The type of work you’ll be carrying out will be physical, involving small civil engineering work in the highway including excavation, backfill, hot and cold-lay reinstatement, frame and cover renewal, and traffic management set-up.

You will work within a team and there are always people for support at the end of the phone - from your manager, colleagues and dedicated support teams. They are all there to help.

You will need a UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points and if you have the ability to drive up to a 7.5tonne vehicle (C1+E type licence) then that’s even better.

We have a very close-knit team within the South West, always there to help each other when needed. Our Management team are very supportive.

We are recruiting for a number of different civils roles:

Civils Team Member

You'll be part of a two person team, carrying out excavation, installation, repair and reinstatement work on the Openreach network. This will include the safe set-up of a work site and the safe operation of any tools, plant and vehicles. A lot of the work will be digging by hand. Full training will be given so if you are physically fit, like being outdoors all day and like a challenge this could be just the job for you.

Civils Team Lead

You will be the site person in charge; this will include leadership of a safe site set-up and risk assessment, the supervision and safe operation of any required tools, plant and fleet to carry out the excavation, installation, repair or reinstatement. You'll be the main point of contact dealing with members of the public and local authorities. You'll also possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and ideally have previous experience of excavation activity.

Civils Field Supervisor

The purpose of this role is to supervise and develop a team of excavation and reinstatement teams. The team supervisor will be jointly responsible for ensuring work is delivered safely, compliantly, efficiently, and in accordance with all industry and company standards.

The role will also require a significant element of site audit and inspection on an in-progress and retrospective basis. Occasionally, the supervisor may also be required to assist with physical excavation/reinstatement activity.

Supervision activity will predominantly be field based, but with time also spent in the designated depot/office.

All roles - Your attendance pattern can require you to attend on any day from Monday to Sunday. Your start and finish times can be between 07:00 and 21:00, depending on your attendance pattern.
