Charlie Sizer & Andy Longstreet
Charlie and Andy tell us their story of working on an internal event called ‘Ask the Champions’ which celebrated our Champions League rights deal with the BT Sport team with footballing legends Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard coming in to our London office!
Charlie and Andy are on our Graduate Programme and joined in September 2016. Charlie is now the first ever graduate to work in BT Sport as a Digital Production graduate, with Andy now an Internal Communications grad focusing on Sport, TV and News. Graduates on the programme rotate every six months for a period of two years and they’re able to get exposure loads of different aspects of our business, helping to build the foundations of an amazing career.
Andy was given the opportunity to help manage the logistics of the event. He organised the attendance lists, activities for the players and created the PowerPoint which was used to accompany the questions being asked by BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey. Andy knew his grad colleague, Charlie, was a huge fan of sports and would love to help with the management of the event and would give them the opportunity to develop their skills and event experience even further. So he got Charlie involved and the two then combined their knowledge to deliver an amazing event, exclusive to BT employees, which allowed our employees to meet the footballers themselves and get plenty of selfies! Charlie was very excited about this and said “Steven Gerard said hi to me, I tried to play it cool and smiled back, but inside I was like OMG and I text my best friend who is a Liverpool fan straight away, she was super jealous!”
Andy said “I didn’t get star struck, but knowing you’re standing in the presence of so many people’s hero’s was pretty cool.”
We asked our grads how they felt being part of such a big event. Charlie said “It’s amazing to be part of these events, it’s brilliant to see how buzzed people get about seeing the likes of Rio and Gerard at BT, and that highlights the amazing talent and content we have in our company. I feel incredibly lucky that the start of my career involves managing events with sporting superstars, I’ve watched these people play football all throughout my childhood and I have to pinch myself sometimes when I see them as a reminder that I’m actually at work!” Andy said “It was really interesting to be involved in such a large and popular event. Being able to see, and get involved in all the preparation that goes into making these occasions run smoothly was so beneficial.”
Both our grads told us they were always keen to work for BT because of the great opportunities on offer here, but both had very different reasons on joining. Andy was recommended BT from his friend and by further looking into the Graduate scheme he was also keen to exploit BT charity’s days and gain further experience from the fantastic charity work he has already achieved in Africa (if this goes out after the charity post we should link over to it)! Charlie’s reason for joining was also awesome. She’d loved working in the industry from her placement while at uni and knew she wanted to work within marketing especially within a consumer brand environment. BT gave her the perfect blend!
The pair are continuing to grow their experience across the company and both are hoping to stay within BT when their graduate scheme ends.
