Improving our operations

If we expect our customers, suppliers and partners to reduce their impact on the environment, we need to practise what we preach.

With this in mind, we’ve set ourselves at new 2030 target for creating less waste, cutting carbon emissions and increasing fuel efficiency. To find out more about these targets and how we’re doing, have a look at our Delivering our Purpose report.

Our carbon emissions

As we’re a major telecommunications company, it’s not surprising that over 90 per cent of our carbon emissions come from the energy we use. We have the second largest commercial fleet in the UK, with 26,000 vehicles. And our own operations make up 6.7 per cent of the total carbon we’re responsible for.

We’re one of the top energy users in the UK, so we have a big responsibility to keep looking for ways we can reduce what we use.

Seven years and counting

We’ve cut down on our energy use for seven years running. By cutting carbon emissions, we’re protecting our business from energy prices rises.

We’re also working with suppliers and other partners to generate more renewable energy supplies. We’ve agreed a four-year deal with npower to supply all of our UK electricity from renewable sources.

Our new, smarter network

One way we’ve reduced our need for energy is by introducing smart meters at our sites, to create a network we control. These smart meters record how much energy we use so we can manage it, using a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) and an Integrated Energy Management System (IEMS). They pull together information on how much we’re using and check it against our bills.

We saved nearly £18 million in a year by getting rid of out-of-date parts of our network and installing newer, more efficient servers.

Our internal energy engagement campaign

We already have over 10,000 active “Energy champions” taking a lead and doing great things to reduce energy. We want to get everyone at BT saving energy, no matter where they’re working or what they do. So our energy engagement campaign aims to get 85 per cent of our people doing this by 2020.

Our environmental management system (EMS)

We’re certified to the international ISO 14001 standard in nine countries – that means we’ve met the guidelines for how we handle our impact on the environment in Belgium, Columbia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, France and the UK.

Tracking our impact

We use a web tool called enviroMANAGER which shows how we’re managing our impact on the environment. We can record how we meet legal requirements, run risk assessments and give evidence of our processes to reduce our impact.

We’re still tracking and cutting down on how much energy we use through new tools like the integrated energy management system (IEMS). We use it to accurately record, assess and store information about things like our waste levels and fuel use. It also prevents admin errors, while giving accurate information about trends and how we’re doing against our reduction targets.
