Our Work Ready scheme helps Jade turn her life around

Without experience, 17-year-old Jade Harrison was struggling to find work when she finished college.
After nine months of searching, she begged her local Job Centre to find her some work experience.
“I didn’t have any experience for any of the other jobs, including cleaning and secretarial jobs,” explained Jade, who is now 20 and a call centre advisor.
But we were able to help when she joined our Work Ready programme, working in Newcastle.
Work Ready helps 16 to 24-year-olds build confidence and gain the skills and experience they need to succeed in the world of work. It offers a range of pre-employment opportunities including work placements and skills-for-work boot camps.
More than 1,400 young people have taken part in BT work placements so far – and more than 50 per cent have gone on to secure jobs or get back into education.
“BT gave me a window of opportunity – I was able to gain experience that a lot of jobs look for,” said Jade.
And now Jade is looking to further her career with us – by encouraging other jobless young adults to join us.
“I am trying to move onto the traineeship area of BT,” she said. “I want to be able to get more involved with other young adults who are struggling to find work and show them it can be done.”
And what is her advice to them?
“You can’t just sit around and wait for something to happen. Applying for jobs is great, but sometimes it takes a little bit more elbow grease,” advises Jade.
“Get out there and do the odd course, gain some more experience. It’s soul destroying being turned down time after time by businesses and jobs - but they do notice the extra effort you put in. It is worth it!”
