BT’s Work Ready programme gets young people from all backgrounds into the workplace

Work ready students

BT is taking practical steps to ensure young people can step up to the jobs of their future whatever their background: the company’s Work Ready programme is primarily designed to help unemployed 16-24 year olds get into the workplace.

Work Ready is a three-week work placement combining skills development, employability training and hands-on experience of jobs powered by technology; we understand that as the world of work is increasingly tech driven, relevant skills are key to social mobility. Our Work Ready programme is designed to give young people a confidence and curiosity around tech to skill them up to thrive in the jobs of the future.

We recently achieved the pledge we made to DCMS to deliver 750 work placement starts in 2017, finishing the year with 810 starts. We are growing our reach and have set a new target for 2018 of 950 to reflect this. Over of half of those who complete a course with us progress into employment, training or education.

A BT work placement includes coaching and on-the-job experience, where young people get the skills they need to kick-start their working life. Work placements don’t just set them up for a job at BT, we help them get ready for other workplaces too, learning a variety of skills for everyday working life.

A BT work placement could offer experience in:

  • field engineering
  • sales and marketing
  • media/tv
  • understanding tech in the jobs of the future
  • frontline customer support
  • mechanical engineering
  • managing and analysing data, including webpages
  • creating and designing presentations
  • researching business problems and implementing solutions
  • warehousing.

We also help people create CVs, brush up their interview techniques and perfect their presentation skills. During the work placement, candidates benefit from the advice and encouragement of BT people. They watch what they do, understand how and why they do it and get ‘hands on’. We want them to leave with a new-found confidence about what they can achieve and have experiences they can talk about at interview.

Successful candidates get a certificate and a reference showing their attendance record and achievements to demonstrate their commitment to prospective employers.

Our placements are available UK wide.
