SafeToNet, a behavioural analytics company that defends the vulnerable on social networks from cyber-bullying, trolling and predatory risk has scooped first prize in the latest BT Infinity Lab competition. SafeToNet provides users with an app that analyses chat on web and social media platforms. It can identify and block inappropriate conversations such as bullying or grooming before they are seen or challenge users to think before they respond.

This innovation challenge was sponsored by our EE and BT Consumer mobile business divisions. We set out to find companies and individuals that are driving mobile communication innovation. We had a fantastic response and after rounds telephone interviews and a pitch session held at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE, we made our selection of six finalists.

Marc Allera (CEO EE) with Richard Pursey and the SafeToNet team

Marc Allera, chief executive of EE and presiding judge at the final, said: “SafeToNet are worthy winners of the ninth BT Infinity Lab competition. We were looking for brilliant ideas to improve customer experience on our network and SafeToNet's ambition to keep children safe while online met the brief perfectly. Their passion, enthusiasm and attention to detail really shone through and we are looking forward to working with them to make their idea a reality.”

Richard Pursey, founder of SafeToNet, said: “It is just phenomenal, this opportunity will help us make a huge difference for child online safety. With the backing of BT and EE we will look to get our solution out to the masses. This award is also a great testament to our team. They all have a passionate belief in what we are doing and to be recognised by BT and EE makes it all worthwhile.”

Judges and finalists at the BT Tower event

Kelly Barlow, director for mobile in BT Consumer concluded “All of the companies that presented tonight showed real innovation and passion. Each has real potential to bring new and better experiences to our customers and I am sure we will be talking further.”

EE and BT product and technology teams will now work with SafeToNet to evaluate their technology and support development roadmap, as well as exploring opportunities to work together commercially. The prize also includes six months membership to the TechHub entrepreneur community.
