Do not forget the donor – how to improve the fundraising experience

The Commission on the Donor Experience

The Commission on the Donor Experience recently revealed the findings of its 18-month initiative and made 526 recommendations on how to improve the relationship between donors and fundraisers.

We are approaching several high-profile fundraising events, such as Children in Need, Stand Up To Cancer and #GivingTuesday. Charities and fundraisers will need to take the time to understand why donors support a particular charity? What motivates them? And what do they want from their engagement with a charity?

For any upcoming events, here are some tips from MyDonate fundraisers on how to put the donor at the centre of your fundraising and help boost donations leading up to your event:

Tell your story
A positive donor experience will be driven by how they ‘feel’ about giving and 66% agreed that supporting charities brought them joy. Take the time to share your story and develop an emotional connection with your donors. Consider sharing what has inspired you to fundraise, upload videos and pictures of you training ahead of the event, post fundraising milestones on social media to keep potential donors interested and engaged.

Make an emotional connection
Invest in your donor relationships. 63% described their experience of giving as “good”, and if donors feel involved in your journey, you could develop lifetime support for any future fundraising.

Understand your charity
MyDonate believes that giving is not just about making a donation, but making a difference. A little more than half (56%) of donors knew how their gift was being spent. It is a good idea to work with your charity and understand the real social impact your fundraising will have and what it will deliver for those in need.

Thank donors
The report found that donors want to be treated with respect with just over half (57%) feeling sincerely thanked. Without their support you wouldn’t be able to make a difference to the causes you care about, so take the time to thank them in return for their help.
